A highly trained musician, who obtained a Masters in Jazz Performance from McGill University in 2006, Michel Berthiaume now teaches in and around Montreal.

From 2004 – 2007 he studied with jazz great John Riley thanks to two government grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Berthiaume’s teaching experience includes private drum set instruction, combo coaching and rhythmic training for all musicians, as well as audition coaching for the Cegep and University level. He’s been on the faculty at College Notre-Dame Since 2004, where his Jazz Combo won the «Concours de solistes et de petits ensembles FHOSQ 2010,and he has been teaching at the McGill Conservatory since 2004. Berthiaume has also taught in other schools including École Secondaire St-Luc and Lindsay Place High School.

Equally at ease teaching beginners, intermediate and advanced student of all styles, Berthiaume asks only for hard work and dedication.

His experience of studying with John Riley was a profound one. He witnessed what he considers teaching at its highest level. Berthiaume tries his very best to rise to the occasion every time with every student he teaches. He expects nothing less than 100% and gives nothing less to his students.

Berthiaume’s drum set teaching philosophy is always adapted to the individual student’s needs and goals. It stresses the importance of having a firm grasp of the basics and working in methodical manageable steps. With this in mind, Berthiaume has created a unique course outline (without being confined by it) that focuses on Technique, Reading and Drum set.

Berthiaume is also an important part of the Montreal scene as a performer. He performs regularly with top notch musicians such as Steve Amirault, Jennifer Bell, Kenny Bibace, Remi Bolduc, Greg Clayton, Kevin Dean, Ron DiLauro, Michel Donato, Fraser Hollins, Brian Hurley, Jeff Johnston, Eric Lagacé, Daniel Lessard, Frank Lozano, Bill Mahar, Joel Miller, Josh Rager, John Roney, Janis Stephrans, Dave Turner Alec Walkington, Dave Watts and Andre White.
